Fire & EMS Personnel

Overview

HealthWorks schedules screenings for approximately 95 fire departments at 40 different fire stations across the Bassett Healthcare Network service region each year. Our staff travels to the company's fire station to perform services mandated by the National Fire Prevention Agency (NFPA). During the course of the evening, an average of 45 Firefighters and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel are seen.

What services are provided?

HealthWorks offers all of the services required by The National Fire Prevention Agency (NFPA) and OSHA to be in compliance for annual medical clearance. These services include:

Baseline screening:

  • Comprehensive occupational and medical questionnaire to determine work-related risk factors, and medical examination concentrating on all major body systems, with particular emphasis on the pulmonary and cardiac systems;
  • Resting Electrocardiogram (EKG) to detect the presence of heart rhythm disorders;
  • Pulmonary function testing, with computer generated report, to detect the presence of lung disease (Class A and B firefighters/EMS only);
  • Vision screening to test distance acuity (with and without glasses), and peripheral vision.

Other screening services that can be added:

  • Cardiovascular Risk Profile – includes total cholesterol (TC), HDL, and TC/HDL ratio. Results and counseling will be given at the same time testing is conducted. (Class A and B at age 45 and older.)* *Required in Otsego County
  • Tuberculosis testing (PPD), Immunizations for Influenza, and Hepatitis B
  • Urine drug screening and tetanus shots are other services we also sometimes provide at fire department screenings.

Annual fit testing:

  • Fit testing – SCBA firefighter mask, disposable N95 EMS mask
  • Vitals – blood pressure & heart rate
  • Completed OSHA questionnaire for review

What to expect at the annual screening

Appointments are made with your fire chief prior to the screening night. We ask that all firefighters schedule in advance, either with your chief or by calling HealthWorks.

Paperwork can be downloaded on this site. Paperwork will also be available at the fire house prior to screening. Please have paperwork completed prior to your appointment time.

In order for appointments to run smoothly, please arrive for your appointment on time. If you are not able to make it to the appointment, please call to let us know.

Dos and Don'ts of the Clinic

DO

  • Arrive at your scheduled time
  • If getting a screening –
    • Bring completed Medical History Questionnaire
    • Bring glasses for vision testing
  • If getting a fit test -
    • Bring completed OSHA Questionnaire
    • Bring personal mask, if applicable
    • Be clean shaven
  • If member is under age 18, a parent or guardian will need to sign a medical release form so the classification and fit testing results can be sent to the fire department.

DON'T

  • Smoke or chew tobacco
  • Eat
  • Drink (especially caffeinated beverages)
  • Chew gum
  • Use candy, lozenges, cough drops, or breath mints

For at least one hour prior to your appointment.

What to expect after the annual screening

The following documents are sent to the fire chief after the screening is completed:

Summary listing of all members including:

  • Member's name;
  • Role within the department (Firefighter, EMS, and/or Fire Police Auxiliary), and classification;
  • Date seen;
  • Date member is due again for screening;
  • Respiratory clearance to wear a mask, date and expiration of fit test, and manufacturer, model, and size of mask approved for member (if applicable).

Report of Findings form for each member seen at the screening listing the firefighter/EMS classification and job description they were given.

OSHA Medical Certification form for each member who gets an SCBA fit test stating if they can wear the SCBA without restriction, with restriction, or not qualified to wear an SCBA.
